Explorean Resorts – Schematic Design of Experiential Programs (1996–1997)

We spent one week at Kohunlich and the place & hotel are truly an experience. You will find a five star hotel in the middle of the jungle; with extraordinary food and all that you need. Every day you will have an excursion that could be kayaking, swimming in a beautiful lagoon or biking in the middle of the jungle.

Overview

Pre-groundbreaking exploration, assessment, and schematic design of experiential programming for two new soft-adventure resorts in the Yucatán Peninsula. At the recommendation of Disney leadership, Peter Mayfield was contracted by Posadas Hotels leadership to serve as an expert in designing best-in-class experiential programs tailored for U.S. soft-adventure travelers.

Challenge

As the leading hospitality corporation in Mexico, Posadas Hotel Group sought to diversify its portfolio with soft-adventure destinations. However, the company had no prior experience developing such projects and needed strategic guidance in creating authentic, sustainable, and marketable experiences.

Approach

  • Conducted an immersive discovery phase at Posadas Headquarters in Mexico City to understand corporate goals and culture.

  • Completed two exploratory field trips to the Yucatán, partnering with the Department of Eco-Tourism at Chetumal University and local guides to identify unique natural and cultural assets.

  • Provided education to the client on eco-tourism principles, emphasizing respect for local cultures, minimal environmental impact, and strong appeal to U.S. adventure travelers.

  • Designed conceptual frameworks for programs that would foster meaningful and transformative connections between guests and the region’s natural beauty and heritage.

Solutions

Delivered detailed schematic designs for experiential programs that immersed guests in the Yucatán’s rich natural and cultural environment, including:

  • Natural history experiences – guided bird walks, indigenous plant-use explorations

  • Adventure activities – rappelling into cenotes, kayaking through lagoons, snorkeling pristine coral reefs
Each program was designed to balance adventure, education, and cultural authenticity.

Results / Outcome

Completed schematic program designs for two locations:

  • A remote coastal site near Mahahual on the Chetumal Peninsula

  • An inland site at the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich

The coastal property was later sold to another developer.

The Explorean Kohunlich, built upon these foundational designs, continues to thrive today as a premier eco-luxury destination.
